Dominican Republic pushes forward with 2 cruise ship projects
After finishing the first construction stage of the Cabo Rojo cruise port in Pedernales province, the Dominican Republic's government is preparing refurbishment works at Arroyo Barril port, in Samaná province.
The US$60mn project to transform the freight-handling facility into a cruise port will start this year and is set to be completed in 2025, local news outlet 7 Días reported ports authority director Jean Luis Rodríguez as saying.
According to the country’s PPP agency (DGAPP), the port will be able to receive ships with up to 8,500 passengers and a complementary tourism facility will also be built.
Rodríguez added that the refurbishment works that began in September last year to turn Barahona port into a facility able to receive medium-sized cruise vessels, will be finished this year.
With Arroyo Barril and Barahona, the Dominican Republic will have eight ports to receive cruise ships.
