Ecovias admits to concession wrongdoings in São Paulo
Brazilian firm Ecovias, which forms part of highway concessionaire Ecorodovias, signed a leniency agreement with prosecutors after admitting to wrongdoings in securing highway concessions in São Paulo state.
Since 1998, 12 contracts were obtained through a cartel that paid bribes to public officials and contributed to political campaigns in state elections, the company admitted in its agreement with prosecutors.
During this period, the state was governed by politicians from the centrist PSDB party.
Ecovias will pay 638mn reais (US$125mn) in compensation as part of the leniency deal, of which 450mn reais will be used to build a boulevard of close to 2km.
Thanks to the agreement with prosecutors, the company will be able to participate in future concession tenders.
