Ecuador's Manta port concession to be re-launched by end Nov

Bnamericas Published: Monday, November 18, 2013

The concession to expand and operate Ecuador's Manta port will be re-launched by the end of November, according to a release from the transport and public works ministry (MTOP).

The length of the concession was raised to 37 years, from 25 years in the previous tender, and seeks to transform Manta port into a deepwater port with the capacity to handle cargo over 240,000 TEUs.

MTOP has not yet confirmed the referential budget of the new concession.

The original tendering process for the concession was launched in 2012 but canceled when none of the nine companies to acquire the tender rules submitted bids.

Since the canceled concession, MTOP, together with the Manta port authority (APM), have worked to update the concession contract, incorporating feedback from interested international investors.

The tendering process will take place over seven months, and includes a prequalification phase.

In addition to the concession, the government is also carrying out US$80mn in infrastructure works to repair the port's two international terminals as well as the dock for the industrial fishing fleet.
