Brazil signs contracts for transmission line concessions

Brazilian President Michel Temer, along with energy minister Wellington Moreira Franco on Friday signed the contracts awarded at the country's last transmission line tender, held in June.

In total, the contracts will result in the construction of 2,5000km of new lines, with 6bn reais (US$1.5bn) expected in investments distributed among 16 different states.

The tender resulted in a record average discount of 55% on the total revenue cap for the contracts, the biggest seen in the last 20 years. The energy ministry estimates that this will produce savings of around 14.1bn reais for consumers during the 30-year concession contracts.

Higher discounts represent more potential savings for final consumers, as the winning consortiums' revenues are considered when calculating electric power bills.

Brazil's next transmission auction is scheduled to take place on December 20.
