The latest announcements from Brazilian development bank BNDES related to power sector financing may be a sign that the lender is stepping up efforts on this front following a drop of sector disbursements in the first half.

In recent weeks, BNDES created a credit line for 2.23bn reais (US$590mn) for renewable energy, authorized 619mn reais for the Cutia wind farm and greenlighted 63mn reais for the Pitangueiras Açúcar e Álcool biomass project.

The bank's newest approval entails financing for 70.9mn reais to support company Subestação Água Azul's 145mn-real project to reinforce power transmission in Guarulhos, São Paulo state, in particular as the local airport expands.

The works fall under a power transmission concession contract signed between the Zopone-controlled company and power regulator Aneel in 2016.
