Huawei promises 5G tests in Ecuador

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei is planning 5G tests with mobile operators in Ecuador shortly, local daily Expreso reported.

The news comes amid troubled times for Huawei, which is keen to consolidate relationships with countries and operators after having been blocked by the Trump administration from participating in 5G networks in the US, while Google plans to end Android support for Huawei phones.

A vendor race is on with the three main telecoms infrastructure companies – Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia – vying to carry out tests and seal commercial contracts. Huawei claims to have more than 40 commercial 5G contracts signed worldwide, while Ericsson claims that of the 12 fully operational 5G networks available worldwide today, nine run on Ericsson technology.

Nokia, on the other hand, is the vendor for Latin America’s only commercial 5G launch, in Uruguay.

In terms of spectrum availability, Ecuador’s telecoms watchdog Arcotel has proposed plans to tender spectrum in the 900MHz, AWS and 3.3-3.6MHz bands before year-end.

Ecuador’s telecoms market faces considerable challenges with the highest mobile specific tax in Latin America, a spectrum tender system geared toward maximizing income for the state, bureaucracy in obtaining infrastructure permits and instability at the regulator.
