América Móvil wins big in mobile, loses in fixed line portability

América Móvil was the largest winner in terms of number portability during January in Mexico. It received close to 54% of all numbers ported, becoming the only provider to report positive net portability figures, according to data from telecoms regulator IFT.

The company received over 920,000 numbers in the month while it donated 557,086 lines to other players, ending the month with a net gain of 363,907 mobile lines.

The country's second largest mobile operator, Telefónica, donated 509,896 numbers to end the month with a loss of 30,094 lines while AT&T, the third largest operator, lost most lines, donating 621,853, a net loss of 321,318 mobile lines.

América Móvil's unit Telcel is the largest mobile operator in the country with close to 64% of the lines and 78% of minutes of traffic. AT&T is the second largest operator in terms of traffic with 13.8% of minutes, while Telefónica comes in third with 8% as of 3Q18.

Total mobile portability reached 1.7mn lines in January.

TELMEX THE BIGGEST LOSER IN FIXED LINE

Despite Telcel's star performance in the mobile market, its sister fixed line company Telmex became the biggest loser during the month with 15,469 numbers donated (close to 50% of all fixed lines ported in the month) to close with a net loss of 11,033 lines.

Triple-play operator Totalplay, which offers some of the fastest fixed-line internet speeds in the country, became the largest net winner with 6,461 more via portability during the month, followed by Grupo Televisa's Bestphone with 2,801 net portability wins.

While most fixed line telecommunications operators in Mexico already offer triple play packages including pay TV and broadband internet, Telmex is banned by law from offering pay TV services. Despite portability losses, the company is by far the largest fixed-line telephony provider in the country with close to 58% of lines, followed by Grupo Televisa (the owner of Bestphone) with 18.3% of the market.

Telmex also operates 52% of all fixed broadband accounts in Mexico.

Totalplay, the main portability winner, operates 5% of the fixed-line market. The total of fixed-line numbers ported during the month was 31,810 lines.
