Itaipu breaks November output record

Bnamericas

Output from the Itaipu hydroelectric plant on the Brazil-Paraguay border reached 8.02TWh last month, its highest ever November tally.

The figure lifted Itaipu's total production from January to November to 90.5TWh, operator Itaipu Binacional said in a statement.

"This data shows the chance that Itaipu has to once again break its annual generation record and move closer to 100TWh," Itaipu Binacional said.

Itaipu's yearly generation record was set last year when the plant produced 98.2TWh.

According to the plant's operations chief Celso Torino, higher output is a result of a constant process of "learning and perfecting" new techniques that maximize performance.

The 14GW facility on the Paraná river supplies about 28% of Brazil's power consumption and 78% of Paraguay's demand.
