Mexico, Netherlands enter flood management collaboration
Mexico's national water commission Conagua and the Netherlands' ministry of infrastructure and environment signed a memorandum of understanding on technical assistance and cooperation for water resources.
The two nations will exchange scientific and technical information in cases of flooding, with special attention given to early warning systems and the safety of dams and levees. They also stressed the objective of using water resources to contribute to economic and social development, according to a Conagua release.
The Netherlands, a geographically low-lying country with approximately two thirds of its area vulnerable to flooding, noted Mexico's works following the 2013 hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid.
The two tropical cyclones ravaged Mexico, both landing within a 24-hour period, and caused massive flooding which prompted the country to declare a state of emergency across the states of Chiapas, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas and Veracruz. Total damages were estimated at US$5.7bn.
The memorandum includes the development of emergency plans and measures to reduce the impacts of flooding through training, pilot programs, seminars and workshops.
