Minas Gerais state suspends licenses for US$100mn iron ore project
Minas Gerais state suspended the preliminary and installation licenses for the 559mn-real (US$105mn) Serra do Taquaril iron ore project of Taquaril Mineração (Tamisa).
The decision was published in the official gazette and followed a court order issued upon request of federal prosecutors, who claim the company did not consult local communities on environmental risks.
Tamisa will appeal the order, a company spokesperson confirmed to BNamericas.
In 2022, the state’s environmental policy council (Copam) approved the licenses, but prosecutors and political parties have tried to suspend the process due to environmental risks.
The asset is expected to produce 31Mt of iron ore over 13 years in the Serra do Curral area in Nova Lima, part of state capital Belo Horizonte’s metropolitan region.
