BOLIVIA
Bolivia aims to raise US$4.4bn in lithium investments from Germany and China in 14 lithium plants, 20 plants for raw materials and seven plants to produce by-products, according to President Evo Morales.
BRAZIL
Brazil's Vale may lose as much as 75Mt in local iron ore sales due to the Brumadinho dam collapse in January. Iron ore sales are expected to total 307-332Mt this year.
The company, meanwhile, posted a US$6.86bn profit in 2018, up 24.6% from US$5.51bn in 2017 as revenue rose 7.7% to US$36.6bn and Vale slashed its net debt by US$8.49bn to US$9.65bn through December 31.
Brazilian steel group Gerdau cut 100 jobs at its steel unit in Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo state. The two-month cutbacks were due to low production of steel rebar.
CHILE
State mining company Codelco terminated a US$260mn contract with SNC Lavalin at its Chuquicamata smelter, claiming the Canadian contractor failed to meet the contract timetable in the construction of acid plants.
COLOMBIA
Colombia's armed forces shut down 35 illegal mining operations in Chocó department. Over the past three years army and police have raided 380 unauthorized operations and arrested 105 miners in the western coastal area, where illegal alluvial gold mining has spread across 33,000ha.
ECUADOR
Ecuadorians rejected mining in copper-rich Azuay province as a plebiscite consulted residents of three municipalities who voted against mining operations in the Quimsacocha water basin.
MEXICO
Mexico's mining output may drop 10% in the first quarter as new policy announcements discourage investment, according to industry chamber Camine. Mexico's mining production fell 3.1% last year.
Canada's Fortuna Silver Mines received a fine from national water agency Conagua over a leak at its San José mine in October. The company has installed additional equipment to mitigate future risk of overflow.
PERU
Peru's government declared a state of emergency in the southeastern Andes as talks aimed at ending protests at China Minmetals' Las Bambas copper mine stalled. Negotiations were set for April 9 in Lima.
