Novelis, MRS Logística pen aluminum transport deal

Atlanta-based aluminum producer Novelis and Brazilian railway operator MRS Logística reportedly signed a five-year contract for the transportation of rolled aluminum coils and recycled aluminum products.

The deal is part of the expansion of Novelis' Pindamonhangaba plant in Brazil's São Paulo state. Investment in the expansion is put at 650mn reais (US$169mn), including a rail terminal connecting the plant to the MRS rail line, paper Diário do Comércio reported.

The expansion will help Novelis improve its logistics system through better access to the ports of Santos and Itaguaí, in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, respectively. MRS serves both ports.

"The partnership with MRS Logística for the construction of the railroad terminal at our largest aluminum recycling and rolling center diversifies Novelis' operations in transportation and logistics, as well as being a more sustainable and efficient alternative for our customers," Novelis' supply chain director Felipe Santos was quoted as saying.

INVESTMENT

When announcing the investment last November, Novelis said the expansion of the company's flagship facility in South America will benefit beverage can and specialty customers by boosting capacity by 100,000t/y of rolling production and 60,000t/y of recycled output.

According to Novelis, the expansion will bring total capacity of the Pindamonhangaba facility to approximately 680,000t/y of aluminum sheets and 450,000t/y of recycled metal. Works are expected to be complete in 2021.

In South America, Novelis operates another two rolling plants and a primary production facility in Brazil.
