Paraguay poised to award highway work supervision contract

Paraguay's public works and communications ministry (MOPC) is waiting for the green light from the Mercosur structural convergence fund FOCEM to award a contract for the supervision of construction of the Asunción Costanera Norte II highway.

Focem, the main financial backer of the highway project, is expected to announce this week it has no objection and that the award process can proceed, the MOPC said in a statement.

The winning firm will also be responsible for environmental management aspects.

Construction work is being carried out by Consorcio DR-Costenera, comprising the in-country subsidiary of Argentina's Benito Roggio and Paraguay's CDD Construcciones.

The supervision contract has a referential budget of 25.5bn guaranies (US$4.6mn).

DR-Costanera has begun ground studies and bringing equipment to work sites (pictured), the MOPC said.

Costanera Norte II is the second of two highway projects planned around the bay of Asunción and the Paraguay river. Costanera II will connect with the completed first phase, Costanera Bañado Norte, and will also connect with Paraguay's route 9 highway, known as Transchaco, which is also being expanded and a contract for the work is due to be awarded in May.
