Peru power sector watch

A 2.8% hike in Peruvian residential electricity rates came into effect on Monday, in addition to a 3.9% increase for commercial and industrial customers.

The adjustment is due to the higher generation price, specifically an update of prices in long-term PPAs between generators and distributors as a result of a weaker sol and natural gas-fired power production, according to energy and mining investment regulator Osinergmin.

The watchdog said rates for residential users in isolated systems rose 1.1% and were up 1.9% for commercial and industrial clients.

The energy and mines ministry released for comment a modification to the regulation of geothermal law 26848 that envisions increasing the maximum limit of geothermal production concessions to 15,000ha from 1,000ha, among other changes.

Peru does not boast any geothermal power production and has seen a drop of exploration authorizations for this NCRE.

The energy and mines ministry also published a resolution in the official gazette that approves the PNER national rural electricifation plan for 2016-25 and tasks the general rural electrification office with its publication.
