Peru: Sales of electrified vehicles would close the year at more than 2,600 units
This Automotive Association of Peru release was published using machine translation.
"For the first time, the participation in sales of purely electric vehicles surpassed that of plug-in hybrids," said Alberto Morisaki, Manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP) after reporting that the sale of vehicles electrified continued to show sustained growth last October.
In that order of ideas, he pointed out that, with the commercialization of 252 hybrid and electric vehicles in October of this year, the sale of this type of vehicle increased by 127.03% compared to October of last year.
In the same way, he said, according to official figures from Sunarp, between January and October of this year, a total of 2,189 units were sold, reaching an increase of 113.77% compared to the same period in 2021. "It is important to note that the The number of units sold so far in 2022 has already far exceeded that sold in all of 2021 (1,455 units), therefore, at the AAP we project that this year the sale of said vehicles would exceed 2,600 units, reaching a record historic," he said.
When disaggregating the results of sales by type of technology, it can be seen that the best-selling electrified vehicles during the first ten months of this year were conventional hybrids or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 1,983 units (+ 107.43%), followed by pure electric vehicles or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) with 106 units (+292.59%), and plug-in hybrids or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 100 units (+143.90%). .
Regarding the participation by technology within electrified vehicles, it is observed that conventional hybrids continue to lead sales, although their participation has been reduced from 93.36% in January-October 2021 to 90.59% for a similar period in 2022; while plug-in hybrids and purely electric ones have been gaining ground, going from 4.00% to 4.57% and from 2.64% to 4.84%; in each case.
Although the progress registered by the eco-friendly vehicle market in our country has been significant, it is still far from the level of sales registered by Colombia, one of the leaders in the region in this regard. According to information from "Andemos", as of October 2022, the sale of electrified vehicles in that country totaled 23,803 units, exceeding the record for the same period in 2021 by 75.7%. "The numbers show us that sales in the Colombian market exceeded 10.7 times those of the Peruvian. With these results, the penetration of the aforementioned vehicles in Colombia reached 10.92%, while our country stood at 1.48%," Morisaki said.
The increase in the number of units sold of electrified vehicles in Peru, he said, is remarkable and responds -to a large extent- to the greater awareness in the population and in companies of the need to acquire increasingly efficient vehicles that contribute to reduce emissions, as well as by increasing the supply of vehicles available in the country with low or zero emissions. Regarding this last point, in 2019 sales were broken down into 13 brands and 26 models, while last October they were diversified into 37 brands and 73 models, which confirms the increase in the supply of the aforementioned vehicles. However, the magnitude of sales is still well below benchmark markets such as Colombia. In order to take that necessary leap, it is important that our authorities play a more active role in promoting said market segment. Among the measures that would facilitate the acquisition of eco-friendly vehicles are lower tax charges, as well as lower import duties, among the most important and effective.
Finally, it is important to remember that the AAP is convinced that the Government must take a more active role to promote the development of the electromobility market in our country. For this reason, a few months ago it delivered to the Government a comprehensive and detailed proposal for the National Electromobility Plan, a document prepared hand in hand with the international consultancy EY and which not only proposes a set of articulated public policies, but also includes their development and goals for the next decade.
