Road blockage hurting Peru's Las Bambas mine

With blockades on a key road linking Peru's second biggest copper mine with the port of Matarani lasting over 40 days, China Minmetals' Las Bambas may not be able to exceed last year's production, according to a newspaper.

Las Bambas produced over 385,000t of copper in 2018 and 453,000t the previous year, according to data from the mines and energy ministry cited by local paper Gestión.

According to economist Hernando de Soto, social conflicts are blocking the development of mineral reserves in Peru worth US$800bn, four times annual GDP.

The ombudsman's office registered about 200 social conflicts in the country as of February, the bulk of them related to the mining industry.

Peru's total copper production fell 0.8% to 2.4Mt last year.
