2022 reported a historic figure for the sale of electrified vehicles, far exceeding the level of the previous year. “This growth is a clear example of the greater awareness of the population regarding care for the environment, which has gone hand in hand with a greater and more varied offer by dealers who have facilitated the entry of said units to the market. Peruvian”, indicated Alberto Morisaki, Manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the Automotive Association of Peru, noting that the sale of hybrid and electric vehicles totaled 248 units in the last month of 2022, with which sales throughout the year reached to 2,680 units, reaching a growth of 84.2% compared to 2021.

By disaggregating the information by type of technology, registered by Sunarp, we see that during 2022 the most commercialized electrified vehicles were conventional hybrids or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle, for its acronym in English) with 2,408 units (+76.5%), followed by of those of the pure electric or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) with 165 units (+400%), and of the plug-in hybrids or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 107 units (+84.5%).

One element that the specialist highlighted is that, within the participation by technology of eco-friendly vehicles, conventional hybrids are the most preferred, although their participation has been reduced from 93.75% in 2021 to 89.85% in 2022. ; while purely electric ones have gained ground, going from 2.27% to 6.16%, while plug-in hybrids have remained at 3.99%.

Despite the encouraging results, Morisaki pointed out that they have not been enough to approach the volumes sold in other countries in the region, leaders in this segment. In Colombia, a benchmark and neighboring country, sales of electrified vehicles totaled 27,845 units in 2022, according to "Andemos", exceeding sales in the Peruvian market by more than 10 times. In this way, the penetration of electrified vehicles in Colombia stood at 10.6%, while in Peru said indicator stood at 1.5%.

"The results obtained in terms of sales of vehicles with low and/or zero emissions show us an encouraging outlook for the future," commented the manager of Economic Studies of the AAP; who, however, pointed out that it is necessary for the Peruvian public sector to become more decisively involved in the expansion of the aforementioned vehicles, considering the positive impacts on society that the renewal of the automotive fleet brings, towards one that is more environmentally responsible. “A concrete proof that the participation of public policy is essential for the development of said market is Colombia, where thanks to various incentives (lower tax burdens, as well as lower import tariffs, among the most important) they have managed to achieve that the sale of electrified vehicles has a more significant contribution to the age and quality of its vehicle fleet”.

Finally, it is important to remember that the AAP is convinced that the Government must take a more active role to promote the development of the electromobility market in our country. For this reason, a few months ago it delivered to the Government a comprehensive and detailed proposal for the National Electromobility Plan, a document prepared hand in hand with the international consultancy EY and which not only proposes a set of articulated public policies, but also includes their development and goals for the next decade.
