Snapshot: The state of play in Argentina's telecommunications market

Argentina's telecommunications revenues in the first half of 2021 reached 433bn pesos (US$4.26bn), compared to 370bn pesos in 1H20, according to the latest figures from regulator Enacom.

Mobile services accounted for 43% of revenues, generating 188bn pesos, followed by pay TV, with 23%, or 98.2bn pesos, of which 67% corresponded to fixed link and 33% to satellite services.

Fixed internet access revenues accounted for 18% of the total and fixed telephony for 10%, while audiovisual communications services represented 6%.

ARPU for pay TV was 1,695 pesos, for fixed internet 1,339 pesos, and for fixed telephony around 1,000 pesos. Mobile ARPU was almost 573 pesos.


Overall, 9.86mn fixed internet accesses were registered by end-June, a year-over-year growth of 9.21%, reaching household penetration of 69.2%.

Of total internet connections, 9.56mn corresponded to broadband accesses, of which 4.6mn enabled speeds above 30Mbps, 2.5mn between 1Mbps and 6Mbps, while 1mn were between 6Mbps and 10Mbps.

The national average speed was 45.6Mbps.

Cable (HFC) accesses made up 57.2%, followed by ADSL with 20.5%. The share of fiber optics has been growing, but remained low at 14.9%.

According to latest Cabase internet index data from December 2020, Grupo Clarín/Telecom Argentina controled 44.3% of the internet market, followed by Telefónica (14%), Telecentro (12.4%) and Superchannel (7.05%). Small operators collectively have a 23% stake.


Overall, 54.7mn mobile lines were in service, a penetration of 119%. In the year-on-year comparison, the number contracted 0.14%.

Of the total, 49.3mn accesses corresponded to prepaid services, including mixed plans, and the rest to postpaid lines.

Also, 1.18mn number portability procedures were carried out. Of this total, 55.3% of users carried out one port, 26.4% two, and 18.3% three or more.

Of those who carried out two ports, 17.9% returned to the original provider, and 4.87% of those carrying out more than two ports.

The mobile services market was divided evenly among Movistar, Claro and Personal (Telecom Argentina).


The market has a very high penetration rate, as 67.8% of households account for 9.66mn pay TV connections.

Most accesses, 7.33mn, corresponded to fixed-link subscription television services.


Over 7mn fixed lines were in operation, representing a penetration rate of 49.7%, which, however, is the lowest figure in the last seven years. The interannual variation shows a 3.80% drop.

Of the total, 6.37mn lines operated in households, 55,000 in companies, and the rest in the government and other sectors.
