Steam turbines arrive at Argentina nuclear plant

The final two of four new steam turbines arrived at Argentina's Embalse nuclear reactor (pictured) in Córdoba province, according to a release from state-run nuclear energy firm Nucleoeléctrcia Argentina.

The replacement of the plant's four existing turbines is part of a project to extend Embalse's useful life by 30 years.

Argentine firm Impsa fabricated the turbines at a facility in Mendoza province. Nuclear energy supplied 5.7% of the country's gross power generation during July, according to data from wholesale power market operator Cammesa.

The arrival of the turbines follows a bilateral meeting between Argentine and US officials to discuss nuclear energy and security.

The two sides pledged to collaborate on issues related to extending the life of reactors, degradation of materials, management of spent fuel and radioactive residue, and research and development of advanced fuel, Argentina's energy and mining ministry said in a statement.
