Sutel approves 26% increase for fixed telephone line rate caps

Bnamericas Published: Monday, September 23, 2013
Costa Rican telecoms regulator Sutel has approved a fixed telephone line rate cap increase of an average of 26%, the watchdog said in a release. The basic fixed line rate will increase to 3,339 colones (US$6.6) and 7.6 colones per minute, compared to the current 1,850 colones and 4.1 colones per minute. The increase follows a request made by state-owned telco ICE in January, which was rejected at that time. Fixed line rate caps have remained unchanged since 2004. The increased rates will be effective upon publication in the official gazette and apply both to conventional fixed telephony and IP telephony. In addition, Sutel decreased the rate cap for fixed to mobile calls by 27% to 21.9 colones from the current 30 colones.
