Temer appoints administration's first woman

President Michel Temer has appointed Grace Maria Fernandes Mendonça as Brazil's new attorney general, making her the first woman he has appointed to his government.

The appointment could help Temer confront one of the main criticisms of his government: the lack of women in top-tier posts.

Mendonça will replace Fábio Medina Osório.

According to local daily Estadão, Osório had several clashes with Temer's chief of staff Eliseu Padilha.

Mendonça has spent her entire career at the attorney general's office, where she was responsible for monitoring supreme court hearings and regularly argues cases in the court.

Estadão reported that Temer previously said that gender was not an essential issue and that women already held important posts in his government, citing BNDES president Maria Sílvia Bastos Marques as an example.
