US$2bn Brazil highway auction attracts global interest

The plan of Brazil's federal government to auction the Integração do Sul highway complex, in southern Rio Grande do Sul state, is attracting interest from global players.

The complex comprises highways BR-101, 290, 386 and 448 and is part of the federal Programa Avançar Parcerias program. The auction will take place on November 1 on the São Paulo stock exchange.

So far, eight groups have showed interest, including one from Italy and one from Spain, reported O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, citing government sources. The paper did not unveil the names of the groups. A Chinese group is also evaluating participation in the auction, added the report.

The concession will be for 30 years and includes the use of the infrastructure but also providing public services like recovery, conservation, maintenance, operation, implementation of improvements and capacity expansion of the 473km stretch, according to the transports ministry.

Total investment is 7.8bn reais (US$2.1bn) with estimated operational costs of 5.6bn reais, which arise due to conservation, operation and monitoring of the stretch.
