Venezuela to invest US$84mn in water projects in Mérida state

Venezuela plans to invest 528mn bolívares (US$84.4mn) in revamping and building aqueducts in western Mérida state until 2015, local news agency AVN said.

The plan includes works in two collection systems, seven adduction lines, five treatment plants, 19 distribution systems, one pumping station and the construction of six storage sites, state news agency AVN reported.

The first works will focus on the construction of a driving lane towards El Bosque pond, an aqueduct in La Tostós and the revamping of Las Canalejas aqueduct.

Venezuela and Mérida state will invest 54.9mn bolívares in 2013, 236mn bolívares next year and 77.9mn bolívares in 2015.

Venezuela is investing US$2.54bn in the next two years to expand water projects, in particular in rural areas.

According to government figures, drinking water access reaches 94% in urban areas and 79% in rural areas in Venezuela.
