WOM boasts of its ESG credentials

WOM presented its environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals for the period to 2025 in its first company sustainability report.

The Chilean telecommunications operator made three major commitments: to be a circular and carbon neutral company, to expand the coverage and use of digital solutions, and to be a transparent company that explores new ESG practices.

This year, the company said it will work to deepen these commitments and design an action plan to achieve its objectives.

One of the most important goals by 2025 is to increase energy efficiency by 10%, taking 2022 as the baseline.

During this year, WOM said work will be done to measure emissions and generate energy efficiency projects in different areas of the company, including the national fiber optic projects (FON) and the new frequencies recently acquired for 5G mobile services.

WOM plans to install solar panels at 203 mobile sites in its network during 2022. By the end of the year, the company also plans to implement pilot projects for the use of green hydrogen and wind turbines.

In 2021, WOM's electricity consumption was 79,924MWh, of which 99% came from the grid and 1% from its own solar panels. In addition, the company used 19,143GJ of fossil fuels.

The operator also intends to increase the total recovery of waste to 80% by 2025. To do so, this year it is committed to recycling 80% of advertising banners and reducing the amount of waste from the corporate building that is sent to landfills by 40%.

Also this year it will seek to increase waste recovery to 60% through improvements in recycling at corporate buildings, stores, sites and advertising, in addition to the recovery of 10t of waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

In 2021, 80% of WOM facilities had a solid waste management plan.

Currently, 44% of the total waste generated in operations, equivalent to 184t, is recycled, the company said in the report.

WOM says it plans to provide connectivity to critical infrastructure in vulnerable sectors and communities through the supply of SIM cards and mobile broadband to serve 60,000 people this year.
