Brazil looks to bolster exports of agriculture tech

Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, May 04, 2016

Brazil wants to increase exports and promote advanced technologies developed by its agricultural research corporation, Embrapa, in the global marketplace, having created a new body specifically dedicated to this.

The country's minister of agriculture, livestock and food supply, Kátia Abreu, announced Wednesday that Embrapa Tech, an Embrapa subsidiary, will be specifically dedicated to promoting the country's agribusiness expertise abroad.

Abreu did not provide any details as to the budget, structure and start of operations of the body.

The announcement was made at a ceremony in the presidential palace in the presence of President Dilma Rousseff during the presentation of the new agriculture financing plan, Plano Safra.

The plan is aimed at providing nearly 203bn reais (US$57.5bn) in credit for Brazilian farmers during 2016-2017.

During the ceremony Rousseff said that the new body is "important because with it we are creating a mechanism to transform our agricultural technology into internationally-competitive products."

Embrapa was founded in 1973 and is one of the largest agriculture technology firms worldwide. On its website, it says it is currently present on all continents, partnering with institutions and research networks.

Its foreign activities are coordinated by the secretariat of international affairs and are intended to transfer and adapt Brazilian technologies to the realities of different countries, the company said.
