This first stage, also called Ferrocarril Trasandino del Sur, considers the recovery of 216km of tracks and the construction of another 93km that cross the Andes mountain range through the Pino Hachado pass to join the town of Zapala, in the Patagonian province of Neuquén, and the port of the southern Chilean region of Biobío. This stage, which will generate 1,400 new jobs, will serve especially for hydrocarbon exports from the Neuquén and Río Negro provinces and mining products from the Mendoza province. The second stage of the project includes the development of the Norpatagónico train.
