Consorcio Menegua, a consortium made up of Colombian firms Morelco S.A.S. and Ismocol S.A., was awarded a contract to build the 480,000l/d El Alcavarán ethanol project, which Bioenergy, the biofuel unit of Colombia state oil firm Ecopetrol, plans to launch toward end-2015. Bioenery is developing El Alcavarán in Colombia's central Meta department and plans to feed its ethanol production with 14,400ha of sugarcane. El Alcavarán's output will be key in supplying the government's planned increase of ethanol additives to gasoline, which currently stand at 8% but which the government plans to increase to 15% by 2015 and 20% by 2020. The project is also designed with 40MW cogeneration facilities in mind. The facilities will cover El Alcavarán's 18-20MW electricity needs, with the remaining capacity added to the SIN grid.
