Brief: Mexico mine spill liquid assumed not hazardous

Residue spilt when a tailings dam collapsed at a Mexican mine is probably not hazardous, according to environmental enforcement agency Profepa.

About 249,000m3 of mine tailings and 190,000m3 were spilt after an incident on June 4 at the Cieneguita gold-silver operation in Urique municipality in Chihuahua state, the agency said in a release.

At least three miners were killed with four still missing. Two more were injured.

Profepa, which inspected the site last week, said the spilt tailings are assumed to not be dangerous as ore was processed via flotation which does not require cyanide.
