The university (pictured), in Texcoco on the outskirts of Mexico City, specializes in the area of agricultural studies and research.

The agreements are designed to benefit the Chinampas community, in Ojuelos, in the western state of Jalisco, and the Majoma and Primero de Mayo communities in the northern state of Zacatecas.

The link-up is part of EGPM's "seeds for innovation" program. EGPM is the Mexican unit of the Italian energy company Enel Green Power.

The first planned initiative is related to the Vientos del Altiplano wind farm in Zacatecas and involves the recovery of pastureland, and rainwater management. The stakeholders also aim to demarcate plots of land for local families to farm. The plan also involves creating school orchards for medicinal plants and vegetables to create new market opportunities and achieve food self-sufficiency for the communities.

The second agreement, for the region where the Palo Alto wind farm is located – Jalisco – will facilitate access to know-how and techniques to foment agriculture for local consumption and regional commerce, with the establishment of orchards and the training of local people in farming techniques, particularly women and young people. Training will cover organic farming and water-use management.

EGPM's director for renewable energy for Central America, Paolo Romanacci, was quoted as saying that the alliance with the university will contribute to the resolution of diverse problems, for the municipalities and for the country as a whole.

He highlighted the importance of working in communities where the company operates through initiatives that promote local development and knowledge with a focus on sustainability.
