Chile's public works ministry (MOP) has declared of public interest a private initiative to build a highway in southern region X to connect the town of Puerto Varas with regional capital Puerto Montt.
The project involves the construction of a 34.3km four-lane highway connecting the two as well as Puerto Montt's El Tepual airport, local daily El Llanquihue reported.
Total investment has been pegged at 80bn pesos (US$153mn), which will be financed through a 27-year concession, according to the project's promoter, Constructora Internacional.
Come 16,000 vehicles per day are expected to travel across the highway's busiest section, which runs between the regional capital and the town of El Tepual, the report said.
MOP is expected to issue a public interest resolution in the coming weeks.
