The Argentine government has authorized four mobile phones manufacturers to install factories in the Tierra del Fuego province, local press reported.
The companies are Moon Manufacturers, Iatec, Cisa Fueguina and Mach Austral. Total investments are estimated at 20mn pesos (US$6.45mn).
"There is strong demand for mobile telephones and in Tierra del Fuego we expect to satisfy that demand as much as possible," Argentine newspaper La Nación quoted Tierra del Fuego governor Hugo Cóccaro as saying.
The factories will be installed in the city of Río Grande in the north of the province.
Last year, Miami-based wireless equipment distributor Brightstar Corporation began manufacturing GSM mobile phones in Tierra del Fuego, a factory that is expected to have an annual capacity of 1.5 million units.
