IN BRIEF: Oi claims Southern Hemisphere Wi-Fi crown

Brazilian carrier Oi managed to exceed 2mn active Wi-Fi hotspots in 2015 and said it had thus become the leader in this segment in the Southern Hemisphere. The announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Oi said it doubled the number of its Wi-Fi hotspots in just one year. Moreover, traffic on its Wi-Fi network grew 260% year-on-year in January.

The service is free for Oi clients. At MWC, the carrier announced a new version of its Wi-Fi app, which is required to access the service. The app has been downloaded 5mn times since it was launched, Oi said.

Oi's Wi-Fi hotposts are in 42 airports around the country, fast-food chains, gas stations, convenience stores and cafes. It also has hotspots in parts of the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Fortaleza and Salvador states.
