The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has awarded a grant to Colombia's Cartagena de Indias municipal water utility Aguas de Cartagena (Acuacar) for technical assistance on a potable water and wastewater treatment system.
The US$513,000 grant will support designs for the expansion of the city's water and wastewater treatment system, particularly in regards to automation and control, monitoring and equipment.
Acuacar plans to build a new potable water treatment plant south of Cartagena to process 160,000m3/d, increasing the system's capacity by more than one-third.
The USTDA grant will also support the integration of existing wastewater subsystems, the creation of an environmental water quality baseline assessment, and the design of an ongoing water quality monitoring program, including recommendations for environmental remediation in a sea inlet.
