Superservicios orders utilities to pay back US$5.3mn to clients

Colombia's public services regulator Superservicios has ordered 25 water, sewerage and waste collection companies to pay back 9.82bn pesos (US$5.28mn) to their clients following unauthorized charges.

Of the total, seven water utilities will have to pay consumers back 1.63bn pesos, while the remaining 8.19bn pesos will have to be paid by 18 waste collection companies, a press release from the agency reads.

Additionally, Superservicios fined eight of the companies involved a total 605mn pesos.

The fines ranged from 25mn pesos for a Bucaramanga-based waste collection company to 400mn pesos for Cartagena-based Urbaser Colombia, the local unit of Spain's Urbaser.
