Spotlight: 2 years on, Argentina’s 'air revolution' gains traction

Over two years after Argentine President Mauricio Macri unveiled a US$1.4bn “commercial air revolution” to boost the air transport sector, works are ongoing to expand the capacity of eight major airports, while 20 improvement projects have been completed so far.

All airports with ongoing works are operated by concessionaire Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 (AA2000), according to national airport regulator system ORSNA.

Buenos Aires Ezeiza international airport expansion (US$600mn)

Ongoing works include a new 45,000m2 passenger terminal and a new parking building with capacity for 1,835 vehicles. The terminal is expected to be finished in August, transport minister Guillermo Dietrich told state news agency Télam earlier this week. Once the modernization is finished the airport will have a surface of 217,203m2, up from 58,400m2.

Córdoba airport expansion (US$143mn)

Works include expanding the main terminal from 22,000m2 to 32,000m2 and adding four boarding bridges, according to the transport ministry. Rehabilitation of the main runway is finished while construction on a second one will start soon, according to AA2000’s website.

San Juan airport expansion (US$34mn)

Involves building a 4,900m2 passenger terminal with two boarding bridges. Works to expand the car parking space to 7,700m2 and the plane parking space to 20,600m2 are finished.

A 4,327m2 passenger terminal, over five times bigger than the current one, is being built while parking lots will increase from 41 to 211. The runway will receive improvements and a 27m control tower is also being built. Works are expected to finish next year, according to Esquel city government.

Iguazú expansion (US$55mn)

Involves expanding the passenger terminal from 8,600m2 to 14,000m2 and adding four new boarding bridges. Works are expected to wrap up by year-end.

Mar del Plata airport upgrade (US$11mn)

Expected to finish during this month, the upgrade entails expanding the boarding and pre-boarding areas, increasing the passenger terminal to 258m2 and a new boarding bridge.

Jujuy airport expansion (US$32mn)

The airport gets a new 8,540m2 passenger terminal with four boarding bridges, a new control tower and 15,400m2 added to the parking lot.

Bariloche airport expansion (US$48mn)

The terminal is being expanded to 16,000m2 while six boarding bridges will be added and parking capacity increases to 800 vehicles. Works are expected to finish next year, according to the Bariloche chamber of tourism.
