Bnamericas
Nicaragua's Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) will begin in January 2000 the US$59mn upgrade of the North highway, MTI's World Bank Maintenance and Rehabilitation program coordinator Amadeo Santana said. The MTI has notified the owners of land that will be expropriated for the upgrade that they remove structures and fences from the affected areas or they will be evicted. The World Bank (WB) will fund the US$25mn upgrade of the Portezuelo-San Benito and Muhan-El Rama sections, while Danish cooperation fund DANIDA will finance the US$18mn upgrade of the San Benito-Santa Rosa section. The MTI is currently in negotiations with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to fund the US$15mn Santa Rosa-Muhan section. The North highway upgrade will be completed in January 2002.
