Modernization of Nicaragua's Corinto port moves a step forward

The modernization of Nicaragua’s Corinto port, which is considered vital to meet demand, is moving forward with the start of construction of a logistics center, Vos TV reported.

The center will include an office building, a container storage area, a gas station and a rainwater treatment facility. 

The overall project, financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) with US$185mn, includes the construction of 15,944m2 of piers, patios for the container and bulk terminals and a grain storage area, as well as cruise ship facilities and dredging.

“One of the main goals of the project is that the ships that load and unload goods, grains, and liquids in the multipurpose port of Corinto, reduce their stay time in half,” said Carlos de Castilla, Cabei’s representative in Nicaragua. 

The executive president of national port company EPN, Virgilio Silva, previously said the works at the Pacific Coast port will boost competitiveness of the port and allow it to handle some 39,000 additional passengers a year.
