Abinader will seek to transform DomRep’s telecom sector

Dominican Republic’s president-elect Luis Abinader is set to launch a national broadband plan to expand telecom infrastructure in the Caribbean country.

Abinader is expected to start his four-year term on August 16.

The plan not only includes 38 key points but also a full proposal for the digital transformation of the Dominican Republic.

According to the plan, Abinader’s administration will launch a telecom fund to boost public-private partnerships to finance the deployment of fiber optics and mobile infrastructure in rural areas. It will also incentivize infrastructure sharing to lower operational costs.

Other important aspects include defining a spectrum policy and speed up the auction of remaining spectrum, reforming the general telecommunications law with help from the private sector, and redefine the role of telecom watchdog Indotel.

While the plan does not mention investment amounts, it signals an interest in transforming the telecom sector in the Dominican Republic.

Abinader won Sunday’s presidential elections with 53% of the votes.
