At a glance: Mexico City's green infrastructure program

Mexico City is seeking public comment to expand on its 2030 green infrastructure program, covering 16 districts.
The consultation is open through June 25. Interested participants can register under this link, which also provides a list of potential projects and other documents.
The green infrastructure program aims to establish rules, objectives and strategies to facilitate infrastructure planning and better environmental services, based on connectivity, accessibility, functionality, and resilience.
Other aims are biodiversity preservation, climate change mitigation, flood protection, and the restoration of natural areas.
Authorities created eight zones (pictured) to develop proposals and implement measures.
Launched in 2019, the program has focused on parks, natural water resources, general infrastructure, and green areas.
The city has recovered and generated green areas to improve quality of life and safety. So far, 16 projects related to parks have been carried out in Chapultepec forest, around Eje 6 Sur, and Periférico Oriente, among other sectors.
Community training regarding water resources was provided to enable resilience and aquifer protection. Several biofilters were installed. Actions focused, among others, on Magdalena river, Canal Nacional, and Xico wetland.
Regarding general infrastructure, the peripheral cycling network was modified to facilitate bicycle-public transport-walking journeys. The plan was boosted during the pandemic, including construction of Cablebús line No. 1, line No. 2, Metrobús line No. 5, and an elevated trolleybus line.
By December 2021, nearly 26mn trees had been planted as part of the green area focus. Technologies to control plant diseases were also implemented.
