Brazil pencils in 5G auction for 2020

Brazilian telecom regulator Anatel has scheduled the 5G auction of frequencies in the 3.5GHz and the 2.3GHz bands for March 2020. The auction will also include "leftover" frequencies from the tendered 700MHz spectrum.

Speaking to Brazilian reporters at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Anatel head Leonardo de Morais (pictured) indicated that the cost of spectrum will be lower than in previous auctions. On the other hand, carriers will have coverage and capacity goals.

Morais said 200MHz will be offered for sale in the 3.5GHz band; 100MHz in the 2.3GHz frequency, and 10MHz in the 700MHz.

In the format being considered by Morais, which envisions all four major carriers participating, each operator would get from 50MHz to 80Mhz of spectrum in the 3.5GHz – less than the 100MHz that the telecom industry deems as the minimum necessary for proper 5G use.

Morais also said that Anatel is studying the refarming of the 3.4 GHz frequency for 5G, and that in the near future it could assign a further 200MHz for mobile broadband.

The 26GHz spectrum, in the range known as millimeter (mmW) wave, will not be made available for 5G at this time.

According to Morais, technical internal studies for the assignment are advanced but will not be ready in time for the bidding process.
