Brazil releases US$50mn for sanitation projects

The Brazilian government released an additional 257mn reais (US$50mn) for sanitation projects in 21 states.

“President Jair Bolsonaro has decided that we make every effort to support states and municipalities at this time, in order to minimize economic impacts, avoid work stoppages and preserve jobs,” said regional development minister Rogério Marinho in a statement.

The government wants to expand public investments in sanitation and infrastruture projects in order to boost the economy.

The states receiving the most funds are São Paulo (64.3mn reais), Bahia (30.5mn), Rio Grande do Norte (29.9mn), Rondônia (17.7mn), Rio Grande do Sul (16.3mn), Paraná (13.3mn), Pará (12.1mn), Goiás (11.2mn), Mato Grosso do Sul (10.6mn) and Ceará (10.5mn).

Experts say improving Brazil’s poor sanitation infrastructure is essential to curtail the increase in COVID-19 cases, which make the works urgent.

"The country still has 35mn people without access to drinking water, so they are people who don’t have this basic resource for correct hygiene recommended by medical authorities," said NGO Instituto Trata Brasil.

"There are still 100mn people living in locations without access to sewage collection, which means these people are vulnerable to other diseases, compromising the immune system and, above all, the development of children."
