Brazil slashes thermopower generation

Electricity generation from Brazil's thermoelectric power plants will fall by more than half in June amid rising hydroelectric output, according to grid operator ONS.
Dispatch from thermal plants to Brazil's grid will fall to 3.5GW from around 7.5GW, ONS director general Luiz Eduardo Barata said.
The decision is expected to mean savings of 200mn reais (US$57mn) a month for consumers.
It will be the fourth time in less than 10 months that standby thermal plants have been shut down in Brazil as higher rainfall, new grid capacity and falling demand ease electricity supply concerns.
Earlier this month ONS switched off 12 backup thermal plants – fired by diesel, fuel oil and natural gas – with combined installed capacity of 2.011GW.

The latest announcement comes less than 18 months after Brazil faced electricity rationing as the country's worst drought in decades crippled its hydropower-dependent grid.
