Brazil’s GNA obtains license to build 1.7GW Açu plant

Brazilian firm Gás Natural Açu (GNA), a joint venture between Prumo Logística, Siemens and BP, has received the installation license from state environmental agency INEA for its second thermopower plant.

The company will build the UTE GNA II plant at Açu port in Rio de Janeiro state.

Construction works at UTE GNA II are due to begin during the first half of this year and will include the installation of three gas turbines and one steam turbine.

The 1.7GW plant will be part of Latin America’s largest thermopower complex, which includes another combined-cycle natural gas unit, UTE GNA I, with 1.3GW capacity. When the project is in full operation it will be responsible for 17% of Brazil’s total thermopower generation.

The complex could later see its capacity expanded by more than double to 6.4GW.
