Brazil's Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul preparing railway studies
Representatives of Brazil’s Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul states are discussing details of plans to construct a 1,285km railroad connecting Maracaju, in Mato Grosso do Sul, to Paranaguá port in Paraná.
On Monday, companies responsible for preparing the technical, economic, environmental and legal feasibility studies (EVTEA-J) and the environmental impact study and environmental impact report (EIA/RIMA) presented preliminary results of the analyses to the state governments.
The plan is to offer the project to private investors via an auction on the Brazilian stock exchange by the end of this year.
The conclusions of the EVTEA-J and EIA/RIMA are expected to be unveiled in September and November, respectively, the Paraná government said in a release.
The preliminary study also contemplates a branch line between Foz do Iguaçu and Cascavel, and nine cargo terminals.
"The railway will provide security for the future flow of agricultural produce from Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul, which practically doubles in size every 10 years,” Paraná governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior said.
“It is also a great time for Brazil to invest in railways. Road transport has already demonstrated that it cannot handle all agricultural production and that of other sectors alone."
A recent study by transport confederation CNT showed that the railway sector is increasingly dependent on private investments, obliging the Brazilian government to develop mechanisms that ensure the inflow of capital.
