Brazil's Roraima state fears Venezuela supply problems

The governor of Brazil's Roraima state, Antonio Denarium, fears fuel, electricity, and fertilizer supply problems after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ordered the closure of the border between both countries.

Roraima, in Brazil's far north, is the only state not integrated into the country's main SIN grid, and relies on imports from neighboring Venezuela and diesel-fired plants.

According to state news agency Agência Brasil, the governor expressed concerns about possible power shortages and has asked for help from the federal government.

"We do not have sufficient electricity to supply Roraima without Venezuela's energy. If there is a cut, we will need to establish a power rationing," he explained.

Brazil's closest city to the border, Pacaraima, does not have gasoline stations, as the local population consistently crosses the border to buy cheaper fuel in Venezuela.

"If the border is closed, Pacaraima might face fuel supply problems," Denarium added.

The governor is also worried about agribusiness firms in the state that import Venezuelan fertilizers, which could harm the next planting period due to start in May-June.

The relationship between Brazil and Venezuela has deteriorated sharply since the inauguration of ultra-rightwing President Jair Bolsonaro.
