Chile resumes works on Temuco cable-stayed bridge
Chile's housing ministry (Minvu) has officially resumed construction of the Treng-Treng y Kay Kay cable-stayed bridge at the southern region of Araucanía, over a year after works were halted after the original contractor declared economic insolvency.
Completion of the bridge will cost 16bn pesos (US$23mn), while the structure is now expected to be finished by 2020. The works will be carried out by local firm Belfi, Minvu said via Twitter.
When the previous builder, consortium Paicavi, abandoned the project, the structure was 61% complete. One of Belfi's first tasks will be a draft a report on the current state of the bridge.
The project, which is the first cable-stayed bridge in Chile, entails both the 240m bridge and improvements to road access, boosting connectivity between the municipality of Padre las Casas and Araucanía capital Temuco.
