Chile's energy sector assesses earthquake damage
Chile's energy sector was assessing the damage after the 8.3-magnitude earthquake that left several people dead and forced 1mn to evacuate amid a nationwide tsunami alert.
Federal emergency service Onemi said in a statement around noon local time on Thursday that nearly 97,000 clients in the cities of Illapel, Coquimbo, Ovalle, Punitaqui and Combarbalá remained without electricity.
The operator of the central SIC power grid said that the initial supply interruption from the quake – which struck 46km off the coastal city of Illapel at 7:54pm local time on Wednesday – resulted in an estimated power loss of 600MW.
Central-northern Coquimbo region (IV), home to nearly all of Chile's 892MW of wind farms, was the hardest hit and closest to the epicenter.
The grid operator, CDEC-SIC, tweeted Thursday morning that Coquimbo wind farms Canela 1 and 2, El Arrayán and Punta Palmeras remained out of service due to a failed transformer, as did three of the four generating units at the 338MW Ventanas thermoelectric complex in Valparaíso region (V).
Chile's largest power distributor Chilectra said it was working to restore service after earthquake-related outages in the Santiago communities of Quilicura, Conchalí and Renca.
The operator of the northern SING grid said that the system was functioning normally. The grid's largest power generator, E-CL, confirmed the same with regard to its power plants.
OIL AND GAS
A spokesman for the 15Mm3/d Quintero LNG import terminal in Valparaíso region told BNamericas that the terminal was functioning normally and was not damaged.
National oil company Enap said in a statement that there were no injuries and no serious damage at the coastal Aconcagua and Bío Bío refineries, located in the regions of Valparaíso and Biobío (VIII), respectively.
Although Enap slowed activity at the refineries as a precaution, the company said that fuel supplies would not be interrupted.
Enap said it was "rigorously inspecting" its Quintero oil import terminal – not to be confused with the aforementioned LNG terminal – in order to restart operations following the quake.
Local media showed images of boats washed ashore, destroyed homes and other damage to coastal towns following the arrival of small tsunami waves after the quake.
The tsunami alert was lifted on Thursday morning.
