Copper climbs on US dollar weakness

The price of copper rose on Thursday in London on the back of a weaker US dollar and ahead of the release of GDP figures in the US on Friday.

Spot copper closed 1.50% higher at US$4,705.50/t (US$2.134/lb) on the London Metal Exchange from Wednesday's US$4,636/t, according to Chilean state copper commission Cochilco.

The Wall Street Journal Index, which measures the greenback against a basket of 16 currencies, was down 0.22% to 87.37 on Thursday afternoon.

The US is set to release GDP growth figures for the first quarter on Friday. Analysts estimate that the US economy grew 0.9% between January and March, according to Capital Economics.

Aluminum closed 0.9% higher on Thursday at US$1,553/t while lead was up 1.3% at US$1,667/t and nickel rose 0.4 to US$8,375/t. Zinc climbed 3.4% to US$1,882.50/t, tin was 1.5% higher at US$15,725/t and molybdenum was flat at US$15,300/t.
