Court orders reinstatement of tolls on Rio de Janeiro expressway
A Brazilian court overturned a decision made by Rio de Janeiro city hall to suspend toll payments on a section of Linha Amarela, a 17.4km expressway that crosses important parts of the metropolis.
The section is operated by concessionaire Lamsa, which is controlled by Brazilian infrastructure company Invepar. The court order was in response to an appeal filed by the company.
The toll charges will be reinstated immediately.
Rio de Janeiro suspended, for the third time, toll payments on the stretch after an audit found that Lamsa collected tolls worth 60 times more than the authorized amount. According to the city hall, the consortium made irregular charges totaling 225mn reais (US$55.7mn) and the suspension was designed to compensate for the overcharging.
Courts also overturned the suspensions on the previous occasions.
