Denmark to help guide Mexico's energy transition

Mexico’s public power utility CFE has signed a cooperation agreement with Denmark to develop a portfolio of green projects with a focus on wind energy, aimed at speeding up the energy transition.

“We are proud to be invited as advisors and partners based on the Danish track record in wind power,” Stine Leth Rasmussen, head of the Danish Energy Agency, wrote on a social media post Wednesday.

“It is paramount for the Mexican government to ensure a green transition that is socially equitable, fostering job creation and economic growth. By sharing Danish experiences with deployment and integration of renewable energy, Denmark can assist Mexico in a low-cost, green transition with a high security of supply,” she added.

Construction for renewable capacity in Mexico has dropped since 2018, when the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration started to focus on achieving energy independence by building a new refinery and gas-powered plants.

According to latest data from wind power association Amdee, wind power capacity reached 7.4GW in 2023, although the industry had expectations of doubling capacity from 6GW to 12GW during the six-year term of López Obrador, which ends in October.
